As proud and hardworking members of the American Consumer Consortium (A.C.C.), the Reed-Mera family journeyed out to the Black Rock Desert in Nevada to help construct the Jokeatron 5200
Conceived by humorologist Natali Leduc, the Jokeatron 5200 is an interactive humor kiosk in the shape of a steel banana peel (which could have been dropped or placed by a 100' foot tall robot to cause another 100' tall robot to slip and fall in a humorous fashion). Users can enter the peel, push a button to tell a joke; The Jokeatron 5200 then broadcasts the new joke with a laughtrack, then continues telling all of its previously recorded jokes.
The fun never stops!
The road to Black Rock City
But fun is serious business and the location of Burning Man is a logistical and physical challenge. The Black Rock Desert is a bleak plain of alkali dust where any wind over 3 mph can cause a dust storm. We had several days of long stretches of strong winds with white-outs lasting 4-6 hours, so it was "otherworldly" to say the least.
Here we are working on a typical day - everyone with dust masks and goggles!
Nine, drilling and riveting with style.
All sorts of installations around the "playa".
Our fearless leader...
Here's Nine telling a joke to the Jokeatron,.. too bad there isn't much sound!
(I'm using my underwater camera...)
Here's a nice pan around the worksite to give an impression of the space.
Duststorm and Crew arrive for work!
My ride to "work" across the "Playa"
It was fun, but time to head back to Houston!
Good-bye naked people and free everything!
Mary Ellen: so great! I never wanted to go to Burning Man, but now that I've seen the desolation it looks way more attractive. I hope the Jokeatron was a big success! And I'll leave with a joke: Son: "Dad, did you get shot in the army?" Dad, speaking slowly: "No son, I got shot in the leggy."
